Mike Owen is a New Orleans style trombone player. Mike was born in Birmingham, England in 1970. He began playing trombone at aged 8. At first, playing classical music with school orchestras and local brass bands, later with a swing band. He studied classical music at Leeds College of Music.
At age 12 he discovered New Orleans Jazz. He heard a recording of New Orleans trombone player Kid Ory and became hooked on that style of jazz.
“Mike’s major influences on jazz trombone are Kid Ory, Jim Robinson, Louis Nelson, Frog Joseph, Trummy Young, Jack Teagarden and Vic Dickenson.”
In 1989 Mike moved to New Orleans and worked there for the next 10 years, playing with many of the old time musicians at Preservation Hall, on the Mississippi riverboats, and at jazz clubs and festivals.He also recorded many CD’s with the local musicians.
In 2003 Mike moved to Aarhus, Denmark.
Here he runs the Bordello Bedwarmers and The Woodland Jazz Band.
Mike can be booked as a solo guest artist, or provide bands for whatever function is required.
